A celebration of The Graystone Hotel Centennial was held Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017, with a Public Open House, preceded by a time capsule dedication. The day featured building tours, historic displays, a barbershop quartet, speakers and refreshments.

The Graystone was built by contractor Augustus Randolph — also builder of the Detroit Lakes library and pavilion — at the request of renowned citizen E.G. Holmes and other investors. An adjacent two-story building was remodeled to match the hotel and became the Annex, housing long-term guests. An adjacent building, known as the Holmes Block, housed a bank and opera house. MMCDC purchased the hotel in 1998. Following completion of hotel renovation, MMCDC acquired and renovated the remaining buildings on the block. MMCDC’s offices are located in two of the buildings–the Hotel and the Teague Building, which is attached to the Holmes Block.

Support for the Graystone Hotel, Annex and Holmes Block renovations was provided in part by public and private investment through the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency, the Federal Home Loan Bank, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, Midwest Bank, TEAM Industries, Renneberg Hardwoods, Anderson Fabrics and the City of Detroit Lakes.
